Sociology
What is sociology?
Sociology is the study of human behaviour and society, including how people interact with each other and how societies are structured. It's a social science that uses critical analysis and empirical investigation to understand social change, problems, and order.
Why do we teach sociology at HAWI?
Studying A Level Sociology will give a perspective on different sociological concepts whilst also providing an insight into important social issues within the UK’s society today and in comparison, to its globalised context. The course will look at the links between poverty, welfare, nature, crime, and health while learning to understand the importance of social structure when tackling social problems. The course will cover this by focusing on culture, identity and socialisation or social differentiation, stratification and power. A Level Sociology includes many practical components and transferable skills that are valuable beyond the classroom and in future careers in a variety of industries. As an essay-based subject, both written and oral communication, argument-building and analysis skills will develop. Further, skills such as evaluating evidence, considering differing viewpoints, forming reasoned arguments, problem-solving, creative thinking will be embedded throughout the course. We believe sociology allows students to promote critical awareness, encourage informed debate, foster social responsibility and inspire lifelong learning.
How do we teach sociology at HAWI?
At HAWI, Sociology is taught as an A Level subject. The curriculum is split across Y12 and 13 with topics focusing on Education, Family and Households, Crime and Deviance, Media and Research and Theory Methods. Throughout the course, students will put themselves within the shoes of important sociologists to delve into sociological theories by discussing, debating, challenging and exploring a Marxist, feminist and functionalist view on society.
For each topic, we focus on the “Big Questions” which students will look to answer these larger sociological concepts through refined learning challenge in each lesson. We teach sociological concepts, theories, and theorists through various forms of lesson structures. These include informed debate, independent and group research, high level discussion and writing application.
How do we make sociology memorable at HAWI?
Alongside sociology lessons, the curriculum at HAWI is comprised of many memorable moments which bring the sociology to life for our students. These include visits to important sociology lectures and discussions by key theorists or researchers in the field. Our curriculum covers changes in societal norms through feminism and Marxism views where we explore various museums and walks through London that highlight these changes. Alongside these opportunities, there are several optional enrichment opportunities for HAWI6 that link greatly to the subject of sociology which develops students understanding further. For example, Model UN and Debate Clubs. These opportunities enable students to develop their communication and social skills, whilst also inspiring students and instilling a greater interest for the subject.
